Razz
“So, Razz,” Charlie started, after being seated across from Razz at a booth in Vinny’s Diner. “Why do I keep finding you in dark ally’s?”
“I’m homeless.” She looked down at the table.
“How did you come to be homeless?” He questioned as he pushed a menu toward her. “Order anything you want.”
Taking the menu and opening it to find something that looked good, she answered, “My mom abandoned me when i was 5.” Pointing at a picture with a stack of pancakes and a few pieces of bacon next to it she said, “That’s what I want.”
The waitress came then to take their orders. After she left, he said, “You were 5? That’s pretty young to raise yourself. How did you do it?”
She shrugged, “I did what me and my mom had always done, looked for food in the dumpsters, and tried to find somewhere warm to sleep for the night, if I can’t, I just sleep out in the cold.”
“You shouldn’t have to live like that, Razz.” She looked up to find sadness in his eyes.
“This is the life God gave me, so I know there has to be some reason I’m living like this.” She looked up as the waitress sat her food in front of her.
“Well, I want to help you, to find somewhere for you to live, where you can eat healthily and sleep in a warm bed.” He said with care in his voice.
“I don’t want charity.” She spat. “And I don’t want to be put in some poor house, I’ve been there and I don’t want to go back.”
“That’s not what I meant, I meant that you could stay with my sister. She would love to have you stay at her place. She has been wanting a girl friend her age around.” He grabbed her after she had put her fork down, food gone. “Please let me help you, I want to.”
Razz stared at his hand holding hers for a minute, thinking before she answered, “Fine, but only if Barker can stay too.”
He smiled, “Good.”
