the first day of school

As she walked in the doors of the school, she heard a few snickers as people looked at her. Jazz was wearing a blue t-shirt with a smiley face on the front, skinny jeans, and blue sneakers. But, what caused their laughs was her hair, in a bun on top of her head, with a blue ribbon with black stripes and colorful paint splotches on it, wrapped around the messy bun.

She didn’t care what they thought though, because she loved that ribbon. When she saw it at claires, she knew she had to have it. Plus, she liked her hair up in a messy bun, she thought it looked good on her, her mom agreed.

Jazz walked passed everyone, ignoring the stares. One thing she couldn’t ignore was that when she was almost to the stairs, she fell, after being tripped by the most popular girl in the school, Tessa. Everyone burst out laughing as she fell. Then laughed even harder as Tessa leaned over, grabbed her bag, unzipped it and dumped everything out. With the colorful back pack still in her hands, she walked toward the girls bathroom, Jazz stood up to follow her, but was held back by someone behind her.

A moment later, Tessa walked out of the bathroom with a soaking wet bag. Dropping it on top of Jazz’s new school supplies. Seeming satisfied with what torture she had put upon Jazz today, she walked away, smiling wickedly.

Whoever had been holding her, pushed her to the ground in front of her stuff. She grabbed the bag and pushed it away from her stuff. The notebooks were wet, but they could be saved. Piling it all up, she grabbed it, and the soaking bag.

The bell ringing, she went in search of her new locker. Finally finding #512, she did her combination, opened her locker and hung up the wet bag. Putting her books on the top shelf, she took out her schedule.

1st hour science, Mrs. Weebly. As she was looking for her classroom, she ran into somebody.

”Oh, I am so sorry.” She said, picking up her books for the second time today.

”No, I’m sorry, it was totally my fault.” He replied, helping her with her books.

Standing up with all her books, she finally looked at him. He was about an inch taller than her, dark brown curls, green eyes, glasses and he was smiling at her.

”I’m Charlie,” He said, holding out his hand.

Shaking it, she answered, “Jazz.” Looking over his shoulder she said, “I need to go, or i’m gonna be late for 1st hour. I’ll talk to you later?”

Nodding he answered, “Yeah, I’ll see you at lunch.” Smiling, they went their seperate ways.

1st, 2nd and 3rd hour went fast, being the first day, so lunch was here before she knew it. Putting her books in her locker, and grabbing her sack lunch, Jazz headed toward the lunch room. Finding a seat in the corner, she slipped a peanut butter and jelly sandwich out with a juice box. Then, she slipped her book out of the bag too. She was reading Twilight when Charlie plopped down next to her.

 ”You read Twilight?” He asked.

She jumped. Then stared at him suprised.

”Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you. Why are you looking at me like that? Am I not allowed to sit here?” He looked confused.

”No, no, sorry. I’m just used to everyone hating me, so i was a little suprised that you sat by me.” She explained.

”Everyone hates you? How is that possible?” He looked at her. “I may have just met you, but so far you seem very likable.”

 ”Uh, thanks.” She smiled.

”I did see what that girl did to you this morning.” He started to eat his ham and cheese sandwich. “I was gonna come to help you, but I couldn’t get through all the people surrounding you, I’m sorry.”

She shrugged. “I’m used to Tessa doing that to me, she did it all the time last year. I don’t like it, but I try not to let it get to me.”

”That’s horrible Jazz. I’m not gonna let her do that to you anymore.” Charlie said determindely. “You have to stand up for yourself or she will never stop.”

She looked at him, suprised again. “You’re the first person who has actually cared, Charlie. Thanks.”

He smiled. “No problem.” Holding out his hand, “Friends?”

 She shook it gratefully, “Friends.

Jazz and Charlie had 4th hour together. Creative Writing, Mr. Milbert. That was her favorite class. But his favorite class was Social Studies, 5th hour, with Mrs. Lyndie. They also had that class together.

6th hour was gym for Jazz. They didn’t do any activities, they just talked about the rules, gym clothes, and sports they would be doing this year.

At the end of the day, she was pretty happy to go home. But, before she could, Tessa walked up to her.

”Hey Freak. How would you like something to eat?” She smiled wickedly as she held her hands behind her back. But before she could shove whatever food she had in her hands, into Jazz’s face. Charlie came up behind Tessa and grabbed the bowl of whipped cream out of her hands. She turned around to see who had taken it, to get the whipped cream shoved into her face.

Everyone burst out laughing, and she smiled at Charlie.  “Thank you” she mouthed to him. He smiled back. She walked with him out the door, they each caught their busses just in time. Smiling to herself the whole way home at how the day had ended.
